Maple Grove Boys Golf Finishes Second in 5AAA Tournament
The Maple Grove boys golf team came up short in its bid to win its second straight state golf championship.
The Crimson finished second, by six strokes, to Spring Lake Park in the Section 5AAA tournament.
The Panthers’ team finished the 36-hole tournament with a score of 597.
Maple Grove’s total of 603 was 12 shots better than third place Centennial.
Jake Birdwell of Spring Lake Park won medalist honors with a seven under par score of 137.
Maple Grove’s Ryan Stendahl finished second at 141, qualifying for state. The Crimson’s Gavin Grahek also qualified for state with a fifth-place finish and a score of 151.
The only other local state qualifier was Champlin Park freshman Bryan Terhaar who shot rounds of 78 and 74 to tie for seventh place.
The state Class 3A tournament is June 14-15 at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids.
