Maple Grove Boys Basketball Team Edges Buffalo for Section Title
In what turned out to be the final game of the season, the Maple Grove boys basketball team beat Buffalo 54-52 to win the Section 8AAAA title.
The Minnesota State High School League announced Friday morning that the state boys tournament will not be played.
Concerns about the coronavirus brought an end to the winter season.
Maple Grove played a strong first half, leading by double figures for a stretch before Buffalo pulled within 29-21 at halftime.
The Bison surged into the lead in the second half, going up by as much as six points.
Maple Grove battled back, and the lead changed hands in a thrilling stretch run.
Matt Willert’s three pointer gave Buffalo a 49-46 lead, but Maple Grove was not done.
RaShaun Parker hit a long three pointer with about 30 seconds left to give the Crimson the lead for good.
Caden Boettcher scored 18 points and Lovell Williams 17 to lead the Crimson.
Willert scored 30 for Buffalo.
It’s the fifth consecutive section championship for Maple Grove.
Only this time, they won’t get to play in a state tournament.
