Maple Grove Boys Basketball Falls in State Semifinals
The Apple Valley boys basketball team beat a higher seeded team for the second straight game, defeating Maple Grove 73-63 in the state tournament Class AAAA semifinals.
The Eagles, seeded seventh, downed the third-seeded Crimson two days after knocking off second-seeded Wayzata.
Maple Grove took a 34-33 lead into halftime, but Apple Valley outscored the Crimson 40-29 in the second half.
Trey Parker scored 23 points and Camare Young 18 to lead the Eagles (21-10) in scoring.
Max Iversen led the Crimson (24-7) with 23 points. Baboucarr Ann added 15 and Jack Thelen 12.
The Crimson were seeking the program’s first state tournament final appearance since 2000.
Maple Grove now faces Tartan for third place Saturday afternoon while Apple Valley meets fifth-seeded Chaska for the AAAA championship Saturday night.
The Hawks beat previously the previously unbeaten Titans in the other semifinal.
