Local Player Wins National Title With Gustavus Women’s Hockey
Lily Mortenson says she is living her hockey dream.
The Benilde-St. Margaret’s High School graduate and freshman hockey player for the Gustavus Adolphus College women’s hockey team was a key reason why the Gusties won last weekend’s Division 3 national championship.
Mortenson scored the game-winning goal in triple overtime of the team’s 3-2 semifinal win over Plattsburgh State and then assisted on the game-winner in the second OT of the title game against Amherst, won 2-1 by the Gusties. The Champlin native also scored the first goal in the championship game.
For the season Mortenson netted 13 goals as the program won their first-ever national championship in women’s hockey.
Lily comes from a hockey family. Her brother Jonah plays junior hockey for the Tampa Bay Juniors in the United States Premier League and her uncles—Todd and Travis Richards– both played professionally. Todd Richards is the former head coach of the Minnesota Wild.
