Legendary Wrestling Coach John Grygelko Dies
Former Robbinsdale High School and Augsburg wrestling coach John Grygelko has died at the age of 93.
Grygelko started coaching at Robbinsdale in 1952. He led the Robins to a state title in 1961.
He coached 14 state champions and 90 state placewinners while at Robbinsdale.
Grygelko, a former University of Minnesota wrestler, moved on to the college level at Augsburg in 1972.
He laid the foundation for an Auggies dynasty.
Grygelko’s teams went 98-12-1 in dual meets at Augsburg, and placed in the top ten nationally four times in the NAIA.
He was named NAIA national coach of the year in 1975 and had 18 of his wrestlers earn All-American status.
Grygelko is in the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame, along with the Minnesota Wrestling and Robbinsdale High School athletic halls of fame.
