Hopkins Softball Falls in State Tournament Quarterfinal
The Hopkins softball team lost 5-3 to Centennial in dramatic fashion in the state Class AAAA quarterfinals Tuesday morning.
After Hopkins tied the game 3-3 in the top of the seventh, Centennial pitcher Helene Krage delivered a game-winning two-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh.
Hopkins scored first, getting a run on an error in the first inning.
The Cougars responded with a pair of runs in the second to grab a 2-1 lead.
The Royals tied it in the top of the third before Centennial regained the lead in the fourth.
That set the stage for the big seventh inning, when Tori Turgeon’s infield hit scored Signe Dohse for the Royals to make it 3-3.
Krage kept them from adding any more runs as a pitcher before coming through in a big way with the bat.
Turgeon was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead the Hopkins offense.
Dohse allowed just four hits and struck out 11 but took the loss for the Royals, with seven walks hurting their cause.
Krage went 2-for-4 with the two big RBI’s for the Cougars while pitching a six-hitter with 11 strikeouts.
There is no consolation bracket this season due to COVID-19, so Hopkins ends the season with a 20-5 record.
Centennial meets Rosemount in the semifinals Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.
