Hopkins Routs Fridley Gold in State Legion Opener
The Hopkins American Legion baseball team scored eight runs in the third inning on the way to an 11-2 win over Fridley Gold in the first round of the state tournament Thursday morning.
Jake Perry hit a two-run homer in the first inning for Hopkins. Fridley Gold, made up of players from Totino-Grace High School, scored one run in the bottom of the first before the Flyers broke the game open with their eight-run third inning.
Brock Zimmer delivered two two-run singles in the third.
Pool play in the 16-team tournament continues through Friday in the St. Cloud area with each team playing a second game Thursday and then a single game on Friday.
The top eight teams in the four pools advance to bracketed play on Saturday with the tournament championship scheduled for Sunday.
