Hopkins Legion Baseball Eliminated In Gopher Classic
The Hopkins American Legion baseball team was eliminated from play in the Gopher Classic tournament Monday morning, losing 2-1 to Hickman, Nebraska.
The Flyers won all five games of pool play over the weekend to be one of 16 teams to advance from the field of 96.
They took a 1-0 lead against Hickman in the first inning on a run-scoring groundout by Paul Safranski scoring Charlie Schaefer.
Hopkins pitchers Aaron Aune and Olin Lysne kept Hickman off the scoreboard until two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning when Carson Baker doubled in Barrett Stone to tie the game. Brady Butler then singled in Baker to give Hickman the win and advancing them to the quarterfinals, where they lost 11-1 to St. Michael-Albertville.
The tournament semifinals and championship game are set for Tuesday.
