Hopkins Holds off Wayzata in Substate 4 Legion Baseball
Hopkins scored five runs over the first three innings, then held off Wayzata for a 5-4 win in the Substate 4 American Legion baseball tournament.
It was a battle between the last two unbeaten teams in the double elimination tournament.
After Hopkins scored on a double steal in the top of the first, Wayzata’s Josh Gullickson tied it with a solo homerun in the bottom of the first.
Leading 2-1 in the third, Hopkins took advantage of control trouble for the Wayzata pitching staff.
Two runs scored on bases-loaded walks, then another runner came in on a hit-by-pitch with the bases full.
That made it 5-1 Hopkins.
Wayzata scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings but couldn’t get the equalizer.
Both teams are still alive in the tournament, which continues Friday and Saturday at Wayzata High School.
