Hopkins Girls Basketball Snaps Providence Academy’s Win Streak
The Hopkins girls basketball team earned a 78-74 season-opening win Saturday over Providence Academy at the Breakdown Sports Tip-Off Classic.
The matchup was a battle of defending champions with the Royals winning the Class AAAA championship last year and Providence Academy the four-time defending AA state champs.
Hopkins had five players who scored in double figures. Jaliyah Diggs led the way with 23 points. Ava Cupito added 13, Marianna Davis chipped in 12, Lanaia Durant scored 11, and Erma Walker netted 10.
Maddyn Greenway scored a game-high 35 points to lead Providence while Emma Millerbernd contributed 15, Beckett Greenway totaled 12, and Lexie Nicolai scored 10. The loss for the Lions broke their 44-game winning streak.
Next up for Hopkins (1-0) is a home game Tuesday against East Ridge, while the Lions (1-1) will take on Eastview at Providence, also Tuesday.
