Hockey Season on Hold: Maple Grove Boys Coach Todd Bergland Shares His Thoughts
Most Thanksgiving weeks, Todd Bergland would be getting his Maple Grove boys hockey team ready for the Turkey Trot tournament.
An earlier announcement made it pretty unlikely that holiday tournaments would be part of the COVID-19 shortened season.
Tryouts and practices were slated to begin this week in the revised schedule, but last week’s announcement that all high school sports would be paused changed that.
Now it’s a waiting game.
Rising COVID numbers in the state lead Governor Walz to announce a four week pause for sports.
For Bergland and other winter sports coaches and athletes, there is disappointment and uncertainty.
He’d just gotten used to the idea of a shorter schedule that would include only Northwest Suburban Conference foes.
Now the schedule will likely have to be re-drawn again, and it’s far from certain that the “pause” will last only four weeks.
Bergland says he’s been keeping in regular contact with his captains, and the hope is to hit the ice in late December for the season.
