Dome at Park Center Sees Abbreviated First Spring
It’s the first year the dome at Park Center High School is available for spring sports teams, but it’s anything but a usual spring.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced the shut down of school and with it spring sports.
So the added benefit of having a good indoor practice space for baseball, softball, lacrosse and more will have to wait.
Park Center Activities Director John Hedstrom says in the wake of a global pandemic the loss is minor.
“The PC dome will serve our students and community for many years to come beyond the spring of 2020; for that we are very grateful.”
Pirates softball coach Curt Cardinal says ” For PC softball we had about twice as many players regularly working out in the dome (in the offseason) primarily due to the easy logistics of just walking right out the door.”
Cardinal also says it’s a very valuable asset to all of the high schools in District 279 (including Osseo and Maple Grove) and having to wait for full spring sports use of the dome until next year isn’t a big deal in the long term.
The dome was a cooperative project between the city of Brooklyn Park and District 279.
Hedstrom says the original plan was for this dome to come down in mid-April; that has been pushed back to sometime in May because of the COVID-19 situation.
