Cooper Football’s Rally Falls Short in Loss to Orono
The Cooper football team rallied in the fourth quarter but couldn’t catch Orono in a 22-13 loss.
The first half was dominated by defense, with Orono getting the only points on a field goal to lead 3-0 at halftime.
The Spartans scored twice late in the third quarter, both on short runs by Aidan Mueller, to take a 15-0 lead.
Cooper came alive in the fourth to really make it interesting.
Quarterback Joe Russell escaped pressure and ran for a 17-yard score on the first play of the fourth quarter to make it 15-6.
Russell threw a touchdown pass to Broderick Powell, Jr. just under four minutes later to pull the Hawks within 15-13.
Clinging to that two-point lead and facing a 3rd-and-10, Orono came up with a great play call.
Wide receiver Graham Beltrand came in motion and took a pitch, pulling up to throw a 65-yard touchdown pass to Noah Arneson.
That was the last of the big plays and helped Orono seal the win.
Cooper drops to 1-1 with the loss, while Orono is 2-0.
Cooper plays at St. Louis Park Friday.
