Cooper Football Pulls Away to Beat Orono in Season Opener
The Cooper football team overcame an early deficit to beat Orono 43-27 in the season opener Friday.
The Spartans led 7-0 after one quarter before Cooper put 21 points on the board in the second quarter to take a 21-14 halftime lead.
Orono tied the game again in the third before the Hawks put two touchdowns on the board late in the third to take the lead for good.
Joe Russell was 20-for-30 passing for 252 yards and three touchdowns for Cooper.
Camden Royal rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns and caught seven passes for another 74 yards and a touchdown.
David Connors and Donte Williams also had touchdown receptions for the Hawks.
Nehemiah Ponder had 2.5 sacks for Cooper, including one that set up misfire on a punt for Orono that led to a touchdown.
Before the game Cooper had a moment of silence for assistant coach Drew Ariegwe, who passed away last weekend.
