Cooper Football Closes Season with Win over Southwest
The Cooper football team ended the COVID-19 shortened season in style with a 39-19 win over Minneapolis Southwest.
The game was a Section 5AAAAA semifinal, and was moved up a day to Friday to comply with the order from Governor Walz to suspend high school sports.
Cooper scored twice in the first quarter, on touchdown passes from Joe Russell to David Connors and Donte Williams.
Southwest scored a clutch TD right before halftime on a Jalen Reed to Charlie Boucher 35-yard pass to pull within 19-13.
Cooper scored twice in the third quarter and once more in the fourth to pull away for the win.
Junior quarterback Russell had a very efficient night, going 13-14 for 260 yards and three touchdowns.
Williams caught 6 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns, while Camden Royal rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown.
In addition to his touchdown reception, Connors threw a touchdown pass as well.
The win gave Cooper a 4-3 record, and with a lineup full of juniors and sophomores, plenty of optimism for next season.
