Champlin Park Boys Hockey Honors Max Akerson
The Champlin Park and Andover boys hockey teams have always been big rivals, but on Thursday the Rebels and Huskies played for something bigger than the game of hockey.
Before the game, the Rebels honored sophomore goalie Max Akerson, who died last Tuesday after a three-year battle with liver cancer.
Champlin Park began the first eight seconds of the game by placing Akerson’s jersey in net and giving him the “start”, a dream he had since he began playing hockey.
Over 1,000 fans filled the Champlin Ice Forum with orange, Akerson’s favorite color.
All of the proceeds went to the Akerson family.
The Rebels won their first game over Andover in ten seasons, which began with Akerson “starting” in goal.
