Bueckers Wins ESPY; Uses Platform to Promote Black Female Athletes
2020 Hopkins High School graduate Paige Bueckers won an ESPY award from ESPN Saturday, honoring her as the Best Female College Athlete.
As a college freshman at the University of Connecticut, Bueckers averaged 20 points and five assists per game and won the John Wooden award as college basketball’s top player.
In her acceptance speech Bueckers praised Black female athletes and believes they should receive more media coverage.
“With the light that I have now as a white woman who leads a Black-led sport and celebrated here, I want to shed a light on Black women,” Bueckers said. “They don’t get the media coverage that they deserve”
Bueckers finished her high school career at Hopkins with 62 consecutive wins.
