Armstrong Football Falls to Big Rogers Rally
For most of three quarters, things looked good for the Armstrong football team.
The Falcons, in their first state tournament since 2003, grabbed a 23-7 lead over Rogers in their state class AAAAA quarterfinal game.
A touchdown strike from Jamen Malone to Seth Newbern with 1:02 left in the third pushed Armstrong’s lead to 23-7.
Anthony Powell immediately answered with a 57-yard touchdown run as Rogers pulled within 23-15 after three quarters.
That was just the start of a huge rally.
The Royals scored three touchdowns in the fourth to stun the Falcons 34-23.
Powell rushed for a 50-yard touchdown early in the fourth on his way to a 293-yard rushing day.
Calvin Kolleh’s 34-yard sweep gave the Royals the lead for the first time, and Thomas Dickerson quickly followed with a fumble return for a touchdown as the Royals’ slow start was long forgotten by the end of a chilly afternoon at Osseo High School.
Armstrong finishes with an 8-3 record, while Rogers moves into Saturday night’s semifinal matchup with Mankato West.
