Alex Miley: Baseball Umpire Entrepreneur
It started as a way to fill a shortage of umpires. Three years later, Alex Miley’s business—Walks and Balks—supplies baseball and softball umpires to youth leagues for both the Osseo-Maple Grove Athletic Association and Hamel Baseball Association.
The 22-year old Miley played traveling baseball through age 14 in Maple Grove and his first job was as an umpire at age 12.
The 2017 Maple Grove High School and 2021 Duke University graduate was a decorated long-distance runner at both schools.
Walks and Balks crewed up to 110 games a week in the peak of the summer season and employs 70 umpires, ranging in age from 12 to 65.
Miley is also employed full-time at General Mills and hopes to expand his business in the coming years.
