1970 Robbinsdale Robins Basketball Honored
The 1970 boys basketball tournament was the final single class, eight-team tournament in Minnesota. Robbinsdale High School was one of the eight teams to qualify for state that season and Thursday morning four players from that team- Brent Fossum, Pat O’Malley, Mike Schoff, and Rob Shish- were together again.
The four were among a group of nearly 100 players throughout the state to gather on the Williams Arena floor in Minneapolis to recognize players—mostly from the 1960s through 1970- who competed in the old one-class tournament.
Robbinsdale finished third in the 1970 tourney, beating Eveleth, losing to South St. Paul in the semifinals and beating Marshall in the third place game.
The state tournament expanded to two classes in 1971 and eventually to four classes—its present form—in 1997.
