Weekend Showcase: Art in 3D at Gallery 5004
Two friends collaborated on an art show that combines embroidery, paper and wood. The show is called “Platonic Dualities” is on display at Gallery 5004 in Robbinsdale.
Susan Hensel and Kim Matthews live around the corner from one another. But they didn’t know it until they met up at the Textile Center in Minneapolis for an exhibition.
“Kim walked across the room and introduced herself,” remembers Hensel. “She asked for ride home and ‘I said sure, where do you live? She said right by you!”
That day marked a starting point for a deeper friendship between the two neighbors and artists.
“We kept talking and finding out we have all sorts of things in common,” says Matthews.

The two neighbors decided to work together on a show at Gallery 5004. Matthews interests lie in three-dimensional art, handmade paper and sculpture. She works with a variety of materials.
“I mostly work additively so that’s kind of a common thread among all these materials,” says Matthews. “I’m also interested in working subtractively so I’m going to start carving again.”
Hensel makes interesting works of art with computer embroidery.
“I’ve been working with digital embroidery for about four or five years,” says Hensel. “What attracted me to the embroidery in the first place is how the light skitters across these threads and changes your perception of three dimensionality and the color.”
The pieces, like the friends, are very complimentary of each other.
“The favorite piece I have is always the thing I’m going to do next,” says Matthews.
The show explores the rich possibilities of geometry, materiality, spirituality and creative dialogue. It is on display this Saturday from noon until 4 p.m. at Gallery 5004.
Gallery 5004 is an event-based art gallery, located just off Main Street in Robbinsdale.
