Thorney Training Proposes Youth Baseball Facility in Plymouth
Brett Thorney, owner of Thorney Training and Mariucci Elite-Minnesota, is proposing a new indoor youth baseball training facility in Plymouth.
The facility would be located at 13800 24th Ave. N., southeast of I-494 and Highway 55. Thorney Training would occupy about 8,100 square feet of space inside a nearly 22,000-square-foot building.
The existing interior would be remodeled for youth baseball training, Plymouth Planning Commission documents revealed. The facility would offer four batting cages, pitching machines, sensor equipment to monitor ball flight, hitting and pitching metrics, and video analysis software, as well as a weight room.
Thorney Training would mainly serve youth ages 10-18 and provide individual and small group training. The business would offer one employee or coach per 8 players with a maximum of 24 players in a training setting, planning documents showed.
The business also expects to eventually accommodate softball players.
“At the start it would just be baseball and and then we would move into softball later down the road,” said Thorney.

Brett Thorney, owner of Thorney Training, speaks before the Jan. 7 Plymouth Planning Commission meeting.
Thorney Training is requesting a conditional use permit to allow for a sports and fitness club in an area zoned for general industrial.
The facility would also allow coded entry for individual training. Main hours of operation would be Monday through Friday from 4 p.m to 9 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Thorney Training has partnered with Marucci Elite, a prominent youth travel baseball organization. Marucci Elite was founded by former Major League Baseball slugger Adam Dunn.
This is the first affiliate of Marucci Elite outside the state of Texas.
The Plymouth Planning Commission recommended approval of the baseball training facility at its Jan. 7 meeting. The Plymouth City Council is expected to give final approval at its meeting on Jan. 27.
