Sweet Potato Comfort Pie Event Honoring MLK Planned for Jan. 15
Golden Valley nonprofit Sweet Potato Comfort Pie and Breck School are teaming up for the ninth annual holiday celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
This year’s event is titled “Edify with Sweet Potato Comfort Pie: A Piece of Unity in Action.”
Rose McGee, founder of Sweet Potato Comfort Pie, says the pies are a sacred dessert in the Black community. She hopes the delicious treats will be a catalyst for change in the community by bringing together people of different races and cultures.
“It gives the community a chance to learn, first of all, with each other about what each other understands as it pertains to race as it pertains to the importance of recognizing what beloved community means,” explained McGee.
The Golden Valley resident and volunteers are making 94 pies to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Junior’s 94th birthday.
The event is on Jan. 15 from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Breck. There’s also an option to watch online.
