UPDATE: Plymouth Woman, 68, Killed in Fatal Highway 55 Crash
**Note: this story has been updated from an earlier vision**
The Minnesota State Patrol says a Plymouth woman died in a fatal crash Tuesday afternoon on Highway 55 in Plymouth. The State Patrol also says the incident is being investigated as a case of criminal vehicular homicide.
The State Patrol identified the driver killed as Catherine Caron, 68, of Plymouth.
Caron was in a Honda Pilot headed north on Industrial Park Boulevard when two vehicles, a Toyota Camry and a Dodge Ram pickup truck, traveling east on Highway 55 smashed into her SUV. Caron was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the State Patrol, the crash occurred at around 2:20 p.m. Tuesday.
Traffic cameras showed the eastbound lanes of Highway 55 closed between Xenium Lane and Industrial Park Boulevard for several hours while the State Patrol investigated the crash. The left turn lane on Highway 55 westbound at Industrial Park Boulevard was also closed during that time.
The State Patrol says the driver of one of the vehicles, a 49-year-old Hopkins man, was arrested for a possible charge of criminal vehicular homicide. Initial reports indicate speed and possible running of a red light played a role in the crash.
MnDOT cameras showed the Camry had burst into flames in the median by the crash scene. That driver was treated for injuries at Hennepin County Medical Center before being arrested. The driver of the Ram pickup, a 73-year-old Corcoran man, was not injured.
In addition to the State Patrol, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, the Plymouth police and fire departments, and North Memorial Health Ambulance responded to the crash.
