Son of Daunte Wright to Get Majority of $3.25 Million Police-Shooting Settlement
Last summer, the city of Brooklyn Center and the family of Daunte Wright reached a settlement agreement worth $3.25 million.
Even though that settlement was reached last June, there was concern brought up by the mother of Daunte Wright’s child, Chyna Whittaker, over how that money would be distributed.
A 62-page court order issued Wednesday has solved that dilemma.
Family’s settlement
According to a ruling by Hennepin County District court judge Bridget Sullivan, the money will be distributed as follows:
Daunte Wright Jr.: $2,021,267.00 (child)
Katie Bryant: $255,000.00 (mother)
Arbuey Wright: $155,000.00 (father)
Damik Bryant: $50,000.00 (half-brother)
Dallas Bryant: $50,000.00 (half-brother)
Diamond Wright: $50,000.00 (sister)
Destinee Wright: $50,000.00 (sister)
Monica Wright: $20,000.00 (half-sister)
Marcus Wright: $20,000.00 (half-brother)
Attorneys’ fees
Meanwhile, the attorneys’ fees and the fee for the trustee of Daunte Wright’s family is broken down like this:
The Newmark Storms Dworak law firm: $487,500.00
The Romanucci & Blandin law firm: $56,233.00
The Trustee, Lisa Brabbit: $35,000.00
Initially, the attorneys had asked for 40 percent of the settlement money, but the judge criticized the attorneys’ fees, saying that the firms ‘spent many hours on activities that did not advance the trustee’s position in a wrongful death or civil rights action against the city of Brooklyn Center.’
The documents also alluded to the “profound animosity” between Daunte Wright’s family and Chyna Whittaker, the mother of Daunte Wright Jr, with Whittaker saying that she hadn’t received any of the $1 million raised in a GoFundMe campaign for the Daunte Wright Sr. Memorial Fund.
Meanwhile, attorneys will submit proposals to the court sometime in the next 30 days for how to distribute the funds to Daunte Wright Jr.
