Sen. Hoffman Released from the Hospital, But Faces ‘Long Road to Recovery’
Sen. John Hoffman has been discharged from the hospital just over three weeks after he was shot nine times in his home in an assassin’s alleged plot to kill lawmakers, his family revealed this week.
The family said Hoffman will be transferred to a rehabilitation facility to receive further care.
According to the family, Hoffman still faces a “long road to recovery.”
Hoffman’s wife, Yvette, was also shot multiple times. She was released from the hospital last month.
In a statement released following the June 14 shooting, Yvette Hoffman said they heard sounds of pounding on the front door and shouts of someone seeking entry. The man at the door identified himself as a police officer.
When they opened the door, Yvette, John and their adult daughter, Hope, were in the entryway. They noticed a man wearing a mask and realized he was not a police officer. The senator lunged at the gunman when he was shot nine times. Yvette was able to push the man outside the door as she was struck by gunfire eight times. Hope, who was not injured, was able to lock the door and call 911.
“[Hope’s] brave actions and quick thinking triggered the notice to public safety officials that a politically-motivated act was potentially underway,” read the Hoffman family statement.
Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were killed in their Brooklyn Park home about an hour and a half after the Hoffman shootings.
The Hoffman family said the senator was visited in the hospital by former President Joe Biden when he was in town for the Hortmans’ funeral.
The accused gunman, 57-year-old Vance Boelter, faces state and federal charges.
