Second Harvest Heartland Receives Shelf-Stable Milk
A Brooklyn Park food bank received a significant donation Wednesday that helps supply one of the most requested items at local food shelves.
Second Harvest Heartland received more than 130,000 cartons of shelf-stable milk thanks to a donation from Kemps and Cub Foods. According to food bank officials, milk is one of the most requested items at food pantries, but often one of the least donated due to lack of cold storage space.
This donation helps meet that need since it doesn’t require refrigeration. It comes at a time when visits to food shelves have spiked.
“We’re at a time right now where we’re starting to see similar demand to where we saw during the early parts of COVID. So as inflationary pressures are on families, they’re seeking other places to be able to make their budgets work and our demand has definitely experienced it,” said Julie Vanhove with Second Harvest.
The food bank says donations from manufacturers are also down slightly due to supply-chain disruptions, another reason why this donation is vital.
Representatives say the donated milk is expected to help hundreds of families in the northwest suburbs.
