School Spotlight: Fair Oaks Elementary Hosts Mini-Winter Olympics with Mentors
Fair Oaks Elementary School in Brooklyn Park partnered with a mentorship program called Classroom Champions to host its own mini-Winter Olympics.
“To see the excitement in their eyes and see those bright white teeth is something we’ve been dreaming about as educators for the last two years,” said teacher Jen Phillips.
It’s the first time the school has organized the event, and the fact that it’s after the pandemic makes it even more special.
“It’s been about two and a half years since we’ve been able to have an all-school community building day of activity and fun together,” said Sara Looby, principal.
Teachers knew a lot of their students watched the Olympics and that it would resonate with students. The entire school worked together to create Olympic events like hockey, luge and sled races … and even a dance party.
“It makes me happy to see everyone running around and playing at every station,” said Gisselle Barreto Garcia, a fifth grader.
