Robbinsdale Teen Named Finalist in Duct Tape Prom Dress Contest
A Robbinsdale teen’s prom dress creation could land her a $10,000 scholarship in a national contest. To create the dress, Ava Motl didn’t sew a stitch. Instead she made it entirely out of duct tape.
Motl’s masterpiece was inspired by Van Gogh’s masterpiece ‘The Starry Night.’
Her creation took 23 rolls of duct tape and 227 hours of work.
“Fashion and art have always played a major role in my life,” wrote Motl in her entry description. “Since I was young, I’ve always had a strong passion for both, and the duct tape prom dress competition was a great opportunity to show off my love for art and fashion.”
Motl said she created the blue and yellow dress by painting over strips of duct tape, cutting them up and layering them until she got the look she wanted. She even made matching heels and a handbag accessory.
The annual Duck brand duct tape contest is called the “Stuck at Prom Scholarship Contest.” The deadline to vote for Motl’s design is July 12.
Winners are expected to be announced a week after the voting deadline.
