REAL ID Update: State Encourages Travelers to Pre-Apply Online
Planning a flight for next year? The need for REAL ID is now 10 months away.
Officials with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Driver and Vehicle Services are encouraging Minnesotans who need a REAL ID to pre-apply online first. Driver and Vehicle Services has a new tool that helps air travelers make sure they have the required documents needed to obtain new identification. The goal is to help travelers avoid multiple office visits.
Starting Oct. 1, 2020, every air traveler 18 years and older will need a REAL ID or passport to fly within the United States. A standard driver’s license will no longer be accepted as of that date. Fewer than 10 percent of Minnesotans (9.72 percent) currently have a REAL ID.
