Police: Wanted Suspect Crashes Stolen Vehicle in Downtown Robbinsdale
Police arrested a suspect Thursday who police said had a stolen vehicle and crashed into parked cars in downtown Robbinsdale.
The suspect, a 40-year-old man from Eagan, was traveling northbound in the 4100 block of West Broadway when he struck two parked vehicles just before 2 p.m. Thursday.
According to Robbinsdale police, the suspect initially stopped, but then began driving away before pulling into a nearby McDonald’s parking lot. At that point, the vehicle had severe front-end damage, police said. A New Hope police officer happened to be in the area and witnessed the incident.
Police said the suspect grabbed a backpack out of the stolen car and then fled on foot. The New Hope officer pursued the suspect on foot and called for backup. Robbinsdale police Capt. John Elder, the city’s police spokesperson, saw the suspect running in the area of 42nd Avenue and County Road 81.
“The suspect kept reaching into his backpack as he was fleeing from officers,” Elder told CCX News.
Elder and the New Hope officer arrested the suspect in the parking lot at Lake Drive and County Road 81.
Numerous officers from Crystal, New Hope and Robbinsdale surrounded the area to ensure there were no other suspects, Elder said.
The suspect told police that he swallowed a fentanyl pill and was checked at a nearby hospital before he was booked at the Hennepin County jail.
Court records show the suspect has multiple felony convictions, including identity theft and burglary charges, and had warrants were out for his arrest.
The suspect is being held without bail.
Police also said the vehicle the suspect was driving was determined to have been stolen out of Bloomington.
