Plymouth To Accept Applicants for Council Vacancy Until March 6
The Plymouth City Council is moving ahead with an accelerated timeline to fill a vacant council seat.
At its Tuesday meeting, the council declared a vacancy for the Ward 3 seat last held by Jim Davis.
Under the city council’s proposed timeline, the city plans to accept applications until March 6. Members could then possibly decide on a candidate at a scheduled March 12 meeting.
The council indicated a preference to appoint someone who won’t be running in the November election.
“My concern is if we go through this process the council will somewhat put their thumb on the scale for the upcoming election,” said Plymouth Mayor Jeff Wosje in signaling his preference for someone who won’t be running in the upcoming election.
Davis stepped down from the Ward 3 seat, citing “recent health challenges.” Ward 3 represents the southeast quadrant of the city.
The applicant chosen by the council would fill the remainder of Davis’ term, which would run until Jan. 6, 2025.
To be eligible, applicants must live in Ward 3 and have resided there at least 30 days. Applicants must also be age 21 or older and an eligible voter in the city of Plymouth.
