Plymouth Council Approves Plans for Two New Apartment Buildings
New apartment buildings are coming to Plymouth, a project that the developer described as a “much-needed multifamily development” for the city.
Bloomington-based Doran Cos. plans to construct two buildings totaling 352 units on a site off Harbor Lane, north of Highway 55 and west of Fernbrook Lane.
Tony Kuechle with Doran Cos. said the project will include an array of amenities including a pool and activity lawn on the second floor, as well as a sports game simulator.
The Plymouth City Council approved the project Tuesday on a 4-1 vote.
Some council members expressed concerns that the project has too many parking stalls that don’t meet city code standards. Officials said 55 percent of the parking stalls in the plans are not code compliant due their to smaller sizes.
“It’s a nice development and it’s an interesting site,” said Plymouth City Council Member Jim Willis. “The problem I have with it is the fact that I believe our parking standards for these facilities, indoor parking, the measurement standards, in my judgment are reasonable and should not be changed.”
Willis was the lone no vote.
The Plymouth Planning Commission recommended denial in July due to similar concerns, as well as objections to the project’s density. The developer the made some revisions based on the feedback.
Council members said that they expect to revisit parking standards before similar projects come up.
“I personally think it’s something that warrants the staff looking at,” said Willis. “I think we ought to be reasonably compliant with what most cities are doing.”
