Plymouth Business To Host Oct. 18 Winter Coat Drop-Off Event
As fall cools, thoughts of winter quickly creep up. It’s why now is the time to help those in need through the second annual “Grill to Warm the Chill” winter clothing drop-off event held Saturday, Oct. 18, in Plymouth.
The “Grill to Warm the Chill” event hosted by Knowledge Computers and Global Ewaste Solutions will benefit the nonprofit Coated in Love. The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Plymouth businesses, located at 5205 Hwy. 169 N., Suite 200.
Every year Coated in Love hosts 3,000 Acts of Kindness, a large-scale event at the Minneapolis Convention Center that provides the homeless population with clothing, personal care items and resources.
Clothing items needed the most are new and gently-used coats, hats, gloves, mittens and winter boots.
Free lunch will be offered during the event.
The winter clothing driving will also mark the release of the new book, “Will You See Me?” that tells the stories of 25 people living on the streets of the Twin Cities. The book is a collaboration by Rev. Shawn Morrison, co-founder, Good in the ‘Hood, another nonprofit that helps the homeless; and Shawn Nielsen, a commercial photographer.
Statistics Show Increase in Homelessness
According to a “Point-in-Time count,” an annual census of the homeless population in Minnesota, on a single night in January 2024, there were 9,201 homeless people living in the state. That’s a 9.6 percent increase over the count done the previous year.
“Helping others is what we are called to do,” said Danielle Igbanugo, founder of Coated in Love. “The need is there. I see it every day, whether I’m in the suburbs, or in downtown Minneapolis or St. Paul. It’s everywhere.”
Monetary donations can also be made for 3,000 Acts of Kindness at CoatedinLove.org.
