Perpich Theater Students To Perform ‘What It Takes!’
At Perpich Center for Arts Education in Golden Valley, there’s a debate brewing. Is the person a villain … or a hero?
The debate will play out on stage in the form of a new musical, “What It Takes!”
Six students from the Perpich Musical Theater Ensemble came up with the concept and wrote the show, which explores villains from the world of musical theater.
“Something I think is really interesting about what we do here, we are an ensemble-based group, so we all collectively create a musical revue show,” said student Maggie Loxtercamp. “We picked different songs from different musicals. We wrote the script and we wrote the flow of the show altogether as a collective.”
One interesting aspect of the show: the musical is interactive. The audience gets to help decide whether a character is actually a “bad guy.”
“We kind of want them to leave thinking that there’s not always one side to a story,” said Greta Kunene, who’s part of the ensemble. “Because a lot of these villains, they are shown to be really bad people, and that they might have done some pretty bad things, but sometimes they’re just doing it because they have to.”
Performances of “What It Takes!” are Thursday, May 2, and Friday, May 3, starting at 7 p.m. Ticket information is available here.
