Org. of Liberians in Minn. Raising Money to Expand Community Center
The Organization of Liberians in Minnesota (OLM) is a step closer to expanding a community center space in Brooklyn Park. It currently owns a suite in a building on 78th Avenue North, off Brooklyn Blvd., and is hoping to raise enough money to expand.
“This has been a dream of our community,” said Kamaty Diahn, executive director of OLM. “We are growing and we want to expand both in size and in needs and services.”
The organization says it frequently has more people who need services than it has space. OLM offers a variety of services, ranging from programs for community elders to before and after school tutoring. There’s currently a program that helps train workers for the health care industry.
“We are the trusted messenger in our community because we know what the challenges are because we lived through those challenges. We can make it better for ourselves,” said Diahn. “We have to come together as a community and go forward.
The group is about $7,000 short of the $56,000 required for down payment. OLM has set up a GoFundMe page to help reach its goal.
