Newsmakers: Sen. Warren Limmer Talks Police Reform, Creating Balance
In our weekly Newsmakers segment, Sen. Warren Limmer (R-Maple Grove) talks about police reform passed last summer and what measures are currently being considered.
“All of these cases are tragic. Every death should affect all of us, but we need police officers,” said Sen. Limmer. “We have to create a balance that’s so vitally important.”
Limmer says that measures the legislature passed last summer in the wake of the George Floyd death were important. “We prohibited choke holds, increased training of officers, focused on mental illness,” said Limmer.
He expressed concerns over eliminating the immunity of police officers and opening up individual officers to lawsuits.
Limmer also said lawmakers should proceed with caution and strive to create balance.
“It’s painful to hear the stories,” said Limmer. “So we have to be careful as we proceed.”
Newsmakers spoke with Rep. Cedrick Frazier (DFL-New Hope) on this issue as well. You can see that interview here.
