Newsmakers: Sen. Limmer Says Bill Banning Junk Fees Is ‘A Long Time Coming’
Sen. Warren Limmer, R-Maple Grove, says a bill banning so-called “junk fees” is long overdue.
“Junk fees are those hidden costs that consumers don’t always see or even know about up front when they are making a transaction,” said Limmer. “Those are the costs that drive consumers absolutely crazy.”
The extra fees can still be charged if the bill is signed into law, but businesses would have to disclose the fees.
“Corporations and businesses can resolve this issue quite simply by putting the fees up front and living by the standard that is established and agreed upon by the consumer,” said Limmer.
The bipartisan bill has been passed by the Minnesota House of Representatives and the Senate and is currently in conference committee. There could also be federal legislation on this issue, but Limmer says the legislature didn’t want to wait.
“We didn’t think this is a time to wait” he said. “We think this is a time to take action.”
