Newsmakers: Sen. Bonnie Westlin Talks Plymouth Bonding, School Cardiac Emergency Response Bill
Sen. Bonnie Westlin (DFL-Plymouth) shares her legislative priorities, including a $26 million bonding bill for Plymouth’s City Center revitalization project, which focuses on walk-ability, housing, and transit.
Westlin is also reintroducing a bill to require Minnesota schools to adopt Cardiac Emergency Response Plan (CERP).
“Survival rates more than double when 911 is called, CPR is started, and an AED is used,” said Westlin. “Basically we know that 23,000 kids every single year are having a cardiac event of some sort outside of a hospital setting and we know that 40 percent of those are happening related to sporting or athletic events. This would require schools to have a plan in place and AEDs at various locations and at close proximity would be easily accessible.”
Last year the legislature adopted a bill that allows schools to adopt a CERP plan if they choose. This new bill would require it.
She’s optimistic about bipartisan cooperation in the legislature.
