Newsmakers: Robbinsdale Family Svcs. Collaborative Talks About Child Abuse, Neglect During Pandemic
Lisa Deputie with the Robbinsdale Family Services Collaborative says COVID-19 has created a lot of mental health issues and stress that can contribute to child abuse and neglect in some families. She advises that parents should have ways to de-stress, and says their partnership with FamilyWise offers a variety of parenting resources.
Robbinsdale Family Services Collaborative is a partner with FamilyWise. Together they work to raise awareness around trauma and resiliency in children and families.
“With COVID-19, there’s a lot of anxiety, there’s a lot of mental health issues and mental health problems,” said Deputie. “We know that stress is one of the number one causes for neglect in child abuse. Having ways to de-stress is very, very important when it comes to preventing child abuse and neglect.”
Robbinsdale Family Services Collaborative, in partnership with FamilyWise, offers a variety of programs and services to help families.
“Some of the programs that we have in the prevention realm is the circle of parents, which is a peer-to-peer support group, where parents rely on other parents on how to raise children and sharing some of the successes and challenges in raising children,” said Deputie. “It’s not professionals with initials behind their names, it’s parents leading each other.”
Robbinsdale Family Services Collaborative recently received an award for their efforts in child abuse prevention. According to the press release, the award is for initiatives that bring in multi-disciplinary perspectives for raising awareness regarding neurobiology, epigenetics and adverse childhood experiences.
