Newsmakers: Rep. Vang Talks ‘Partisan’ Debate, Gun Bills
Rep. Samantha Vang, DFL-Brooklyn Center, told CCX News that the legislative session has been fast-paced as lawmakers hit early deadlines in a shorter session this year.
Vang described recent floor debates as “very partisan,” highlighting DFL priorities including gun violence prevention measures and efforts related to ICE policies.
“Our focus this year is on making sure we are addressing those issues,” said Vang. “The first bill that we tried to get across the floor, enforced our judicial right that ICE should not enter schools or hospitals without a warrant. It was a simple bill, but failed.”
Vang said other bills include a ban on assault weapons and large capacity magazines. Those gun bills have since stalled due to a split legislature.
Rep. Vang also shared an update on her work on the House Legacy Committee, where discussions this year are focused on outdoor heritage, conservation and preserving Minnesota’s natural resources.
“Legacy is unique in that we get to talk about more fun projects like arts and culture, access to the media, conservation and water,” said Vang. “Minnesotans love the outdoors. When I hear activities like hunting, fishing and out in parks, I get excited about it. Legacy is unique in its own regard.”
