Newsmakers: Hy-Vee Shares Hydration Tips and Tricks
It’s more important than ever to stay hydrated in the summer.
“If you are trying to calculate your own personal needs, take your body weight and divide it by two. That’s the minimum number of fluid ounces you need in a day, so a 150 lb. person would need roughly 75 fluid ounces,” advised registered dietician, Melissa Jaeger from Hy-Vee. “But keep in mind that it is hot outside and we are spending more time outdoors so it’s important to add fluid each day, and luckily we can get that through water and through food.”
Besides drinking water, pick out produce and dairy products to help replenish lost fluid.
“We are losing different electrolytes when we sweat, which is sodium, potassium, a little bit of magnesium, calcium and all of these you need to replenish,” said Jaeger. “So that is why we need to focus on hydration supplements like electrolyte replacement beverages or making sure we are drinking fluids throughout the day.”
If you need help getting enough fluids, Jaeger recommends a few tips and tricks.
“Set some reminders on your phone,” said Jaeger. “Maybe it’s simply a matter of having a more fun water bottle at home.”
Another tip is to make hydration tasty. Jaeger shares a recipe that can replenish electrolytes.
