Newsmakers: Hy-Vee Dietician Shares How to Get Started with Health, Wellness
Melissa Jaeger, registered dietician with Hy-Vee, says one of the most frequent questions she’s asked regarding health and wellness is how to get started.
“I think it’s important to remember to take it back to the basics and how do I incorporate all of the food groups at mealtime,” said Melissa Jaeger. “If you are envisioning your dinner plate right now, think about it and plan to have half of it be fruits or vegetables.”
Jaeger says if you can’t envision that dinner plate, then consider perhaps setting a goal to help you get there.
“Those fruits and vegetables provide tons of fiber to help keep you full longer and it also gives us essential vitamins and minerals,” explained Jaeger.
Jaegar says before getting started with a diet plan, take into consideration your personal needs versus the needs of those around you. Just because a diet worked for a neighbor or friend, doesn’t mean it will work for you.
“It needs to be a diet that you can sustain long term,” said Jaegar. “How can they setill incorporate the foods they know, they love, and the foods that they are willing to eat in a way that’s healthful and making sure they are still meeting dietary allowances for the day.”
Consider reaching out to a local dietician, or taking an educational course to get started on the right track. Hy-Vee offers a Wellness Wednesday series over the lunch hour where you can go over different topics, led by a registered dietician. There’s an upcoming Virtual Health Fair and even more resources available at Hy-Vee.com/health.
