Newsmakers: Hennepin Co. Commissioner Explains ‘Functional Zero’ Homelessness
Hennepin County Commissioner Kevin Anderson tells CCX News that the county is working toward maintaining “functional zero” homelessness for veterans.
“Really what it means is that the system to help people who experience homelessness is working,” said Anderson, who represents Hennepin County District 7, which includes parts of Maple Grove and Plymouth. “So when we identify a veteran that is experiencing homelessness, we are able to move them into stable, affordable housing within 90 days.”
The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners unanimously set forth on an initiative to address homelessness among veterans within the county. The measure was introduced by Anderson as well as fellow Commissioners Angela Conley, Irene Fernando, Debbie Goettel and Jeff Lunde.
The county has been designated a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon county.
It has also developed partnerships with the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs to bolster housing support and income solutions for veterans.
The Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans, federal veteran’s assistance agencies, local public housing authorities, and service providers have also partnered with the county to bolster veteran support.
“It’s a really big accomplishment, but it doesn’t mean that we’ve solved all of our problems,” said Anderson. “This designation is part of highlighting how well our system and partnerships are working.”
If you know a struggling veteran, Anderson recommends you contact the Hennepin County Veterans Service Office for help.
If you are a veteran, consider checking on your benefits regularly, because they are subject to frequent changes.
