Newsmakers: Crescent Cove To Expand Compassionate Care for Families
Crescent Cove in Brooklyn Center is one of only three pediatric palliative care homes in the nation — and the only one in the Midwest — providing respite and end-of-life care for children with shortened life expectancies and their families.
“When life is short, love is endless,” said Mary Gaasch, executive director of Crescent Cove. “We surround each family with care and compassion.”
Gaasch said Crescent Cove is expanding its support beyond the children it serves to include the entire family through sibling camps, parent retreats and community events.
“They bring their child to Crescent Cove which is kind of like a fun summer Camp where we have all kinds of integrative therapies art and music and they get to go on pontoon boat rides on the lake, strange-looking ‘rescue ducks’ come to visit us, and all kinds of fun stuff and the parents go home and then they get to take a nap maybe do some laundry,” explained Gaasch. “We offer a wonderful sibling camp. We have events for families, we had yoga on the lawn last weekend, we have a moms retreat coming up and we had a dad’s ‘Grill and Gather.’ So lots of ways to build community for these families who have very unique lived experiences and can lift each other up in challenging times.”

Former Twins’ catcher Joe Mauer poses with a child during a previous event.
Crescent Cove will host an open house on Nov. 18 for the community to tour the facility. Community members should RSVP on the Crescent Cove website.
Gaasch also reminds the community not to forget Give to the Max Day on Nov. 20, where people can donate and have donations matched.
