New Plymouth City Council Members Sworn In
The city of Plymouth swore in new council members on Tuesday, all will serve four-year terms.
Kimberly Nelson received the oath to represent Ward 1, a fast growing-area of northwest Plymouth. Scott Aldrich was sworn in to represent Ward 3 in the southeast part of the city. Joel Spoonheim took the oath of office for the at-large seat, which represents the entire city.
After the swearings-in, Spoonheim took time to thank the man he is replacing: longtime Council Member Jim Willis, who served since 2005 before deciding not to run for re-election last fall.
“He has served in this seat for over 20 years and also as city manager for Plymouth for many, many years, and has committed over 50 years to this community,” said Spoonheim. “I don’t think the seven of us can fill his shoes, but I will do my best to do so.”
This is the first time in office for Spoonheim and Scott Aldrich. Kimberly Nelson was appointed in March 2024 to fill a vacant seat before winning election.
Nelson shared her thanks to Plymouth residents, but also acknowledged the wildfire disaster on the West Coast.
“Today is hitting a little bit differently for me,” said Nelson. “Part of that is my thoughts are really with L.A. County right now. It just really goes too … those kind of moments make you really reflect on the importance of local government and of community.”
