New Mural at Zanewood Rec. Center Promotes Self-Awareness
There are new improvements at the Zanewood Recreation Center in Brooklyn Park. The popular teen hangout spot was rebranded The Wood at Zanewood Recreation Center. Part of the campaign includes a new logo and a new mural.
Artist Reggie LeFlore painted pictures of some young people who participated in programs at the recreation center. The goal is to show positive images and tell the stories of teens on successful journeys.
“I want them to see themselves just like we see them. I want them to see them in a joyous space where they’re smiling and laughing,” said Tashawna Williams, arts and engagement specialist. “I really want them to really see a reflection of themselves each day that they come through this door.”
About 18 young people participated in the picture project. Officials say they want to expand the mural project. Discussions for a new teen center are currently underway.
