New Hope Weather Watcher: ‘Getting Close’ to Record Snowfall
New Hope Weather Observer Steve Reckers says this week’s snowfall will push the northwest suburbs closer toward a record-breaking winter.
“I think we’ll break it this year because we’ve got a good part of March yet to go with some forecasted this week and then a couple more weeks after that before the month is over and then we typically get snow in April,” said Reckers, who records data for the National Weather Service. “I like to watch what happens because I’m an observer and it’s always interesting. My wife is certainly tired of winter.”
Reckers says the snowfall could help alleviate the drought.
“This is really going to help the drought situation, helping to fill up lakes and wetlands, and the soil moisture. We’ve been so dry in previous years,” said Reckers.
Headed into Thursday, we were just shy of 75 inches of snowfall, which is about 14 inches shy of the all-time mark recorded here in the northwest suburbs.
