New Council Members Take Oath in Maple Grove, Brooklyn Park
Local cities welcomed new faces and some familiar ones too on Monday night.
In Brooklyn Park, a pair of new council members took the oath of office for the first time.
One of them was Amanda Cheng Xiong. Elected at 22 years years old, Xiong told CCX News in an earlier interview that it’s an “honor” to represent Minnesota’s sixth largest city, saying she wants to use her role to make sure young voices are heard.
Shelle Page, another newcomer to the Brooklyn Park City Council, had Golden Valley Mayor Roslyn Harmon administer her oath. Page, a 25-year Brooklyn Park resident, ran for council for the first time last fall.
Tony McGarvey was also sworn in having won re-election. This will be his second term.
Maple Grove’s McCullough Sworn In
In Maple Grove, there are two new council members.
One of them, Jon McCullough took the oath of office on Monday night. In a previous interview, McCullough told CCX News that it’s “very important for our residents to feel safe as well as our residents to know that we are very fiscally responsible.”
Mike Ostaffe, who could not attend Monday’s meeting, was also elected last fall. Ostaffe, who served on the city’s planning commission, is expected to be sworn in at a future meeting.
Both were elected out of a field of eight candidates.
Also at the meeting, Maple Grove Mayor Mark Steffenson thanked former council members Judy Hanson and Kristy Barnett for their service. Both Hanson and Barnett served two four-year terms.
Steffenson also listed the expansion of Maple Grove Hospital as one of the top developments he hopes to see come together in 2025.
