National Volunteer Week: AHS’s Claire Ouellette
Claire Ouellette has been volunteering at the Animal Humane Society for more than 12 years. She helps animals before they find a forever home and she loves it.
“It’s a warm feeling,” says Ouellette.
Ouellette has been serving for over a decade, but the Animal Humane Society says they appreciate anyone who donates their time.
“We have people from all walks of life,” says Daniela Vonarx, the volunteer services manager. “It’s extremely rewarding and very humbling. “
Vonarx says communication is key to helping potential owners find their perfect pet.
“Sometimes people come in they just want to look,” added Ouellette. “Sometimes they just want to hear a dog bark or a cat meow and that’s ok. The fact that they are here and they care about these animals means the world. If they adopt that’s even better but everyone is welcome.”
Ouellette says helping the animals find forever homes is more rewarding than they could have ever imagined.
“I don’t even know that I could describe how rewarding it is,” added Ouellette. “It’s not even something I can put my finger on or put in to words. It’s just a feeling and it happens without me thinking about it and I’ll suddenly have that sense of peace and fulfillment.”
